Final Jury

Bursa is located between cliffs, and the city grew linearly. However at the site, Hanlar Bölgesi hasinteresting pedestrian movement, and socio-econo structure is centralised around Khans. So this pushed me to analyze Khans. Because even if Bursa is linear, it is centralised in one terrain.

The historical background behind it, Hans play a strong role. They stay permanent, and their surroundings are changing in time for different purposes and so I interpreted it’s symbiotic relationship between hans and surroundings. Both the khans and their surroundings get benefit from each other but khans are more dominant.

However, rather than economic structure, khans void is more influential for me. It’s scale gives the dominancy in such a dense city. In history people used khans like hedquarters for trade, accomodation and storage. However they also used it for easuring their animals in these courtyards. Today, they act mor as a commercial centr and it has a huge public area for resting(leasure actually).

From this pattern, I define leisure as freedom provided by the cessation of activities. In contrast, to work we should perform or carry through a task requiring sustained effort or continiously repeated operations.

Training methods, study of an activity, proper materials utilisation, learning, teaching, collective work and produced developement are materials to enlarge that definition. Leisure and work intersecting as Biennale idea because in Biennale, leisure and work definitions are blurred. This is because of the participants are workers and visitors are leasurers.

Somehow, it could return. Visitors could participate activities and they can also be workers. In order to adapt this to our site, taking khans void as reference not vertically, I have interpreted this void in negative z axis. So activities are located around that. Actually, I trid to relate program elements to each other with main and subspaces becaus of my work and leisure definitions. And this leads to plan in- between spaces between the program elements tat I have.

In Venice Biennale, lockers are commutative elements for defining the work rooms. I have interpreted archive, beause archive integrate and hosts the whole program elements.  In every storey, archive evaluated the program. For example it can seve for exhibition, open for public study(and offices evaluate for study), training in workshops, serving for collective work offices in order to develop archive itself. So I preferred to have a khan concept, that has a symbiotic relationship between each other.

As a footnote, I would also like to explain why I have choosed to search about Bienalle’s and the aspects that are similar to it. I suggested that people will visit this bienalle because of its function, for work or leisure; and I found 3 non-used historialbaths to restorate and serve for cultural exhibition which are; Dayıoğlu Hamamı, Davutpaşa hamamı, Kayhan Hamamı and I reused Kayhan multi-storey carpark. Also I suggested that this area is full of empty slums, and restorate for commercial. And my proposal will serve for my supporting node.
